"The wonderful thing about writing Christian is I don't have to describe anything because he's a bloke," said James, suggesting it was much more complex interpreting a woman's perspective. She had to observe a world of her own creation as an outsider, from a very different angle, and figure out how to fit new thriller elements into an existing narrative. James revealed it was "quite an intellectual challenge" and "a massive jigsaw puzzle" having to approach the story from a different character's perspective. "It sort of saved me because I don't know what I would have done had I not had to keep me company during this weird time," she said. Writing Freed offered James an escape from reality over the past 18 months, transporting her to Seattle and all the places where the stories in the book take place. The first, Grey: "Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian," was published in 2015 and the second, "Darker: Fifty Shades Darker as Told by Christian," in 2017. The spinoff novels contain the same plot lines but told from Christian's point of view. Those books spurred a movie trilogy starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. The original trilogy is told from the perspective of Anastasia "Ana" Steele and chronicles her life with her dominant lover Christian Grey. The announcement about her sixth novel in the franchise was made Sunday, March 7, by Dominique Raccah, Publisher and CEO of Sourcebooks. James' BDSM-themed trilogy that serves as a spinoff series for her " Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy, now has a release date: June 1.
